Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests are a fast, highly accurate way to diagnose certain infectious diseases and genetic changes. The tests work by finding the DNA or RNA of a pathogen (disease-causing organism) or abnormal cells in a sample.

Sometimes called “molecular photocopying,” the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique used to “amplify” -and copy small segments of DNA. Because significant amounts of DNA are necessary for molecular and genetic analyses, studies of isolated pieces of DNA are nearly impossible without PCR amplification. This technology allows our laboratory personnel to quickly identify many pathogens the same day a patient sample is taken. This testing Data directly correlates to improved patient population management at the first patient encounter.
